Catching drum is an art form of sorts, you need a good leader, a sturdy hook and solid line to start. Then you will need either fidler crabs or a blue crab that has been broken into about 4 pieces. bait up and fish the pilings of a bridge or pier if nothing in those areas get to a reef or other place where rubble butts up to some deep water. (mouth of Gpt Harbor). when you hook up you will know it.... very strong fighter and 50 to 70 lbs is not unusual from deep water channels and piers near the beach....
Sometimes you can see the fish feeding on the pilings if the water is clear and the wind is down.... always approach these with the bait already in the water as any splash nearby will spook them, Simply cast away from your target and reel back to the piling or pole....
One downfall is they will often swim around the pole once hooked so first priority after hook-up is move him to open water by any means possible.... I generally extend pole as far out over water as possible and backtrack away from where I just was....
Fine eating in the smaller weights, 5lbs and under, larger ones tend to have parasites along the spine and although some people do eat them I will not...
