The Pogys are here. The favorite food of many fish and a staple for trout that feed on the thick schools of them. If you can catch some, they make great bait dead or alive. They are hard to keep alive because they require a lot of oxygen. I caught my 7 lb Speck on a dead one.
Pogys should be here all summer. look for a school of pogys along shore and around bayous.usually the water will be dark with the fish because they are thick, the surface of the water above the school looks like light or misting rain on on it, or just a surface anomaly. There will be little flashes of silver almost consantly underneath. unlike mullet that show as a group of Vs on the surface that turn in unison. mullet can also be good, caught a 15 inch white trout on a 5 inch mullet 2 days ago( fishing for a red on that pole w/ the mullet) Good luck
Here's the short version of a longer story about keeping them alive. I read it in Mike Lane's Ms Rod and Gun (I believe.) In addition to a good supply of oxygen: When menhaden are caught they are stressed and immediately start urinating and defecating and giving off a lot of slime and scales in the water. change out the water 10 minutes or so after they're caught and then repeat the water change twice more with 10 min between changes it will help them survive much longer. Also make sure not to shock them with water much warmer or cooler than the water they are in. Good Luck, hope this works for you. Bill
